Book Rhi-view: Mooshka, A Quilt Story by Julie Paschkis

Mooshka, A Quilt Story by Julie Paschkis
Picture Book, Family, Tradition
Hardback $16.95 (32 pages, PEACHTREE PUBLISHERS)
A delightful, intergenerational bedtime story featuring a remarkable quilt and a reluctant new big sister.
Karla loves her special quilt, Mooshka. But Mooshka is more than just a quilt - it speaks, comforting Karla at bedtime with whispered stories. Karla's grandmother lovingly pieced Mooshka together using scraps of fabric from members of Karla's family. Each square, or "schnitz," shares a special memory of Karla's ancestors and their lives.
When new baby sister Hannah arrives, Karla's routine is upset and Mooshka falls silent. Only when Karla shares Mooshka with her sister does the quilt begin to speak again and tell Hannah the treasured stories of her family.

Perfect for Bedtime! (4 stars)

The tradition of quilting has a rich and special past. Taking scraps from all over to make a beautiful and practical blanket is one of those great traditions that has somewhat died out and become more about the art than reusing old fabric. But MOOSHKA manages to capture that special part of what a quilt can be and weaves it into a sweet children's story perfect for reading at bedtime.

Though my little girl is under the targeted age for this story she loves bright illustrations and just being read to. Karla's story is tender and brought a smile to my face as I shared it with my daughter. I think it would be a great book for an older sibling who is learning how to share with a younger one. What really made it special for me though was that it was very much about the special stories Karla's quilt had to share about where each square came from.

There's a quiet cadence to MOOSHKA that makes it a perfect read for any youngster who loves a calming book before bedtime. With it's sweet tale of family tradition and what it means to be sisters and vibrant illustrations it'd be a great addition to any library for the young reader.
