The Friday Five: Goals for 2012

I don't really make resolutions. The very idea always seems laughable. Instead as the beginning of a new year looms I reflect on what has changed in my life over the past year and think what was great and what could have been better. Was a bad at managing my time? Did I discover I really enjoyed a new book genre? Did I suck at remembering to say thank you for both the good and the bad things that taught me lessons? Was this year a year I would want to repeat?

In the end I find a few things that I was happy about to be even better at or something I didn't get around to doing that this new year should be the year for. So don't call these resolutions because really they aren't... they're just thinks I want to reflect on a year from now as having improved in my life.

#1. Hydration
It's silly and simple but at the very top of my list because I suck at it. If it isn't filled with black gold I don't wanna drink it. Water is just so... watery. blah! But so important for better health. In 2012 I want to be a better drinker and hand-in-hand be better about moisturizing my skin too. In 2011 I started rethinking my eating habits and how I fed my family. The improvements were wonderful but I could do with a bit more water rich fruit too.

#2. Getting Dressed
What can I say? I'm a stay-at-home mom. The ONLY true perk of the job? Pajamas can be your uniform. But should they? For years now I've used the excuse it saves laundry and it's comfortable which are both fine but it has a psychological effect I don't like. I don't notice it until I bother to get dressed and fix my hair on any random given day we have errands or something. Then I feel just a little more human. lol

#3. The Garage
Our house is 3 times the size of our former apartment. We rented a small storage unit while apartment bound for some of our extra furniture and such. The apartment was supposed to be a six month living situation that had turned into 7 years. So how is we managed to fill our two car garage with so much crap since we bought this house? This year we were supposed to have it organized and car-ready for winter. Uhm yeah, still hasn't happened. *facepalm* It's scary how messy it is. In 2012 we HAVE to do something about it before winter.

#4. Buying What I Need
I grew up very poor. It's a source of personal issues with money I struggle to deal with still. One of those is that I learned that my needs were below those of others. Putting the happiness of everyone above my own is a problem I am learning to overcome in moderation. My husband recently chided me for my shoe selection. I own one ratty pair of Chuck Taylors, a few cheap pairs of flipflops, a pair of cheap velvet flats, my ancient gym sneakers, and just bought a clearance pair of boots at Old Navy. They're all black save for the flipflops (only 2 pairs of those are black). You see a trend here?

This year I'm going to make it a goal to buy at least two things I need without second guessing whether one of the kids needs something (honestly they never do 'cause I always go overboard with them) or if the hubs needs more video games or fish tank crap. If I need a coat or shoes I WILL buy them for myself. I will. Really. Okay this is already making me panic but I'm going to work on this. By year's end I want to feel better about putting my needs first once in a while.

#5. Fearing Others
Another bad habit I picked up from the people who raised me is an intense need to gain the approval of others. Over the past decade I've improved a lot. I have more self confidence than I ever had in the first 3 decades of my life. But I've hit a bit of a wall. Both online as a blogger and in my personal life I've found a few areas I continue to hold back in for fear of rejection, critisism, or simply offending people. I've been letting certain people intimidate me or held back from being truly honest because confrontation or tension are a guaranteed result. But is it really worth it? Not really. Not when in my heart of hearts I want to make new friends or tell a bully to back off. Not when it's holding me back from being more true to myself or taking risks worth big reward. 2012 is the year of the Dragon, I need to embrace that Dragon spirit a bit and be bolder, command more attention.

A nutritious but yummy energy bar...

I went through an 'energy bar' phase when I was nursing our daughter. My gallbladder was full of stones and I was struggling to keep my calorie count a healthy one for us both while not eating foods that aggravated my condition while putting off my surgery. Energy bars became my go-to snack when I was too exhausted to cut up apples or make a sandwich—being up all night with a baby is hard on mommies. I wish I had tried these instead of the other ones I was noshing on.

Larabars are so simple and start with dates which are one of my favorite foods. Each flavor from Apple Pie to Tropical Fruit Tart is then created with simple additions like apples, cashews, unsweetened cocoa or cherries, cinnamon, pecans or sea salt just to name a few. Instead of dozens of unpronounceable oils and such you get whole foods, raw foods. If you love a good fruit and nut based trail mix these are your bars.

I received the mini Cherry Pie as my sample and while I love dates, the unsweetened cherries were a little too tart for my personal taste. I think something a little sweeter to balance it out such as the chocolate chips in the Chocolate Chip Cherry Torte bar would be more to my liking. That said it was really good. I just have a nasty sweet tooth.

In checking out what other flavors are available I also found that there are some other neat things about Larabars. They are gluten free, kosher, free of colorings, additives, and preservatives, are not baked or cooked (though a few ingredients are roasted or steamed) and most varieties are vegan friendly. While none of these are personal concerns of mine it's interesting stuff to know if you have friends or family with special diets. They also do not freeze or melt making them a perfect diaper bag or glove box snack stash year-round.

I can't wait to try another flavor next time I'm in the market for a yummy snackable bar. The Gingersnap , Carrot Cake, Cappucino, and Chocolate Coconut Chew in particular all sound like ones I'd love.

Notes: I received a sample bar from Influenster. I have received no compensation for featuring this product and my opinion was not swayed by the free sample.

Quickie Deals for my Readers!

In a random haze of distraction I joined Jewelmint to check it out sometime this month and while I don't wear loads of jewelry I tend to have a weakness for pretty vintage costume jewels so it's been fun ogling the goods. But my problem is I never know what to buy. If I buy a pretty bauble I like it never goes with anything I own. In fact I am IN LOVE with a necklace and ring on there that I wouldn't have a clue how to wear because of how unique they are.

Anywho, I received two related emails from them Monday night and had to share the basics real fast.

The BeautyBox by Beachmint is $29.99 + ($3.99 shipping)

Now I have no idea exactly what is in it or if the above pictured box is what it is but I threw caution to the wind and splurged on it. I've been in an uber beauty junkie phase of late so I thought since it's at a value of $164 and I'm only paying about $34? Can't be a totally bad deal. Plus I can try some new brands then share the details here.

I'm pretty sure all you need is a Shoemint account (Beachmint is the inclusive of Jewelmint, Shoemint, etc.) to pick one up.

WonderMint Mystery Bag is $29.99 + (FREE shipping)

I used it on my first bag then, I actually went and ordered 2 more bags (I got 10% off next piece promo code from that first purchase!) after I started writing this post. I thought I might do a giveaway for one of the pieces if I get doubles or something. I kind of have my fingers-crossed that a certain couple of pieces are NOT in my bags 'cause there are some I think are fugly but overall so many are just beautiful. Wish me luck!

Not sure how much longer the bags are available but they're still for sure up on their facebook store. Let me know if you buy one, I'll want to see your haul! ;)

Rhi Wish You a Merry Christmas! Rhi Wish You a Merry Christmas!

As if the holidays weren't stressful enough the hubs had to have his gallbladder out—just like I did in February—unexpectedly this week. So I do apologize for the downtime I'm taking. Between wrapping gifts, the SD's birthday and the hubs' being in misery I'm burning the candle at both ends while trying not to drip it anywhere. ;)

So from our home to yours I wish you a very Merry Christmas and if you're celebrating another holiday (or none at all) may the best come your way!

I think posts will be non-existent in the next week but if time permits I'll do my best. TTFN! -- Rhi

    December CraveBox: Unboxing

So I had literally reached the point I was sure it had been lost in the mail. Every time I checked tracking I got that it was still in New Jersey. But then it showed up on my doorstep late last evening via a second mail delivery which was odd. At least it's not lost though. :)

    Santa came early this year!
I already knew everything that was in here since the site had the stuff listed right away and others had received their boxes days ago. But it was still fun to open it.

    Beauty Rhi-flection: imPRESS Press-on Manicure

I was actually working on a video version of this post but I literally cannot get enough quiet in this house to do the voice over with the photos so I'm skipping it in favor of a very detailed post instead. I hope you'll find it informational and leave a comment if you have questions. XO -- Rhi

My first experience with press-on style nails was back in 1989. It was also my last until these babies came along. Back then you put double sided sticker-tape things on the nail then pressed the nails on or something like that. Being 10 at the time, I just didn't have the skills to make them sit right and my nails are VERY flat. (My manicurist actually said she doesn't think acrylics would work on my nails because of that). The press-ons back in the day were advertised on TV so much that—like the born consumer I am—I had to have them. lol So my stepsister and I begged my new stepmother for them when we were in the drugstore. Why she caved I'll never know. I just remember the stickers they went on with and the barfy peach color they were. Wow, I had bad taste back then... some would debate that hasn't changed but I digress... the point is two decades have passed since that first taste of fake nails. The product has to have evolved since then right? It sure has!

They're so flat I was skeptical imPRESS Manicure would work.

Lots of fun but with a few negatives... (4 Stars)

So I was going to do a video review. I really was. But the first set of batteries ran out in seven days because my daughter loved it so much. Now though I can't get her to hold still and play with it long enough to catch her on camera. She's two so it's to be expected. Maybe at a later date. ;)

When I first got this ordered through Vine I actually went into the store to look at it beforehand. My daughter is really freaked out by loud toys and talking plushies (with a few exceptions) so I wasn't sure if this would be too much. She promptly turned away from it as my husband and I checked it out. When it actually arrived daddy sat down to show her how it worked and even though she cried at first, once she felt safe with dad there she LOVED it. To the point I wanted to break it so I wouldn't have to hear it ever again. I think it may have been originally designed as a torture device. lol

But I digress, it's actually really bright colored and cheery, which we all love. The music is a bit carnival-ridey and gets old fast. The popping mechanism scared my daughter at first (it is VERY loud) but once she got used to it she would set her hand on it to feel it pop up. Her favorite part is the little Tumblers though. I actually found that you can buy just them in 3-packs so we bought a second set (stocking stuffer!) since these guys love going down our stairs and hiding under furniture. They have the cutest little faces and can handle a major beating. I do have one warning though... the top part of the slide can come a bit up from the locking zone where it meets the curly part and this could pinch little hands if unsupervised.

Now I'm no expert on sound levels and hearing loss but with fresh batteries in this, even at the lowest volume setting I think this toy is way too loud. If my daughter was in the younger age range for this toy I wouldn't bother with the batteries at all. The slide alone is perfectly fun. That said this survived my husband kicking it across the living room when our daughter hurt herself trying to stand on it while he had his back turned. It's durable and obnoxious but loads of fun for kids in the 1-2 year range. I would, however, caution all parents and grandparents not to leave their little one unsupervised with this toy, the slide issue mentioned above and the size on this make it easy to have accidents. I have the photos of my daughter's head wound to prove it.

Notes: I received this product via the Amazon Vine reviewer program and this is cross posted from my review there.

Beauty Rhi-flection: NYC New York Color

There are two great reasons to get excited over New York Color this holiday season. The low price range of their products make them perfect stocking stuffers for the budget conscious glaminista. With Christmas parties and New Year's Eve there are bound to be parties to attend where a new look would be fun but who has the extra cash to spend on the latest trends?
    Nude New York Liquid Lipshine
Let's face it. This season is all about the shimmer and the glow. Pick a feature to highlight and for less than five bucks you can add a stylish new look to your party palette.

In Influenster's Holiday 2011 VoxBox I received a sample tube of NYC New York Color Liquid Lipshine in Nude York City, a subtle nude gloss. I liked it so much that while I was in the store picking up trash bags I made a special trip to the other side to find the New York Color section.

Now I'm pretty shy but if I'm excited about something I tend to forget that. So I ended up next to another lady who was looking at the NYC section and we both dodged in at the same time to grab something. I apologized and so did she as she let me reach in past her and grab another Liquid Lipshine. I then told her which one I was wearing and she said it was 'gorgeous'. In my naturally conspiratorial fashion I noted how inexpensive they were too, perfect for stocking stuffers. The I proceeded to grab a bunch more.

Alas it was busy and the hubs was giving me the 'OMG you are not buying more makeup' look even though he loves it when I play makeup artist and always compliments what I've done. So I didn't get time to really look and I didn't find the false lashes I wanted. *pout*

I did make off with a nice haul though! I bought:

That's $12.69 total... less than the cost of one of my favorite boutique brand lip glosses! You seriously cannot beat that price for the quality.

But back to that whole holiday look thing. One trend I've seen a lot of is crazy jewel toned liner winged out at the sides. Which is why I grabbed Islands in the Stream. It looks emerald but actually is much more of a teal color. I'm honestly still an eyeliner newbie. It intimidates me like no man's business but I played with it for about fifteen minutes and voila... this would look great with a very subtle lip (I'm thinking Nude York City would be a good one if your natural lip shade runs on the pinkish side).

Next I tried the Big Apple Spice Liquid Lipshine but honestly the color wasn't very flattering on me. It's a little more coppery than I think works with my fair skintone. I think it would be beautiful on someone with a midtone. I dunno, what do you think? What would I pair with it for eyes and cheeks? I'm just blank there.

As I still had my nails done I haven't tried the Starry Silver Glitter polish and as much as it pains me to give it up I'm going to stuff it in my stepdaughter's stocking. She will LOVE it. If you've got steady hands there's a trend out there where you only use the glittery polish on the upper third of the nail that looks so amazing. If I can get her to sit still long enough over New Year's maybe I'll give her a mani.

So what am I loving this holiday season? Saving a ton of money and getting to try some fun trends without blowing the last of my Christmas budget. When the two parties I have in January roll around I can't wait to dress up and shine like I just stepped off the island of Manhattan. Thanks New York Color!

Notes: I received one product for review from Influenster which did not sway my opinion of said product. All other products featured here were purchased by me for the purpose of getting to know the company/product more. I was in no way compensated for my review/feature of this product.

    My Mentos Pure Fresh Moment

Influenster asked us to share an experience where Mentos Pure Fresh saved the day or we'd wished we had some. I wish I had a great tale of how Mentos saved the day for me but not quite. Here's my story...

During my pregnancy with my 2-year-old I not only was sick with all day 'morning sickness' but gestational diabetes as well. Constant nausea and having to count every teeny tiny calorie when you're pregnant and ravenous is a special kind of hell. But I'm a toughie and found that a regime of a certain herbal tea, ginger candy, sour candies, energy bars, and chewing gum helped me stay sane.

When I wrote my review on the Influenster site I wasn't lying about Mentos Pure Fresh being the gum I found.

So there I was, six months pregnant and my husband was out of town when the kids and I piled into my inlaw's car to go to the state fair. We didn't make it. We were almost there and stopped at a red light when we were rear-ended. No, not just rear-ended... we were the front of a three-car pile-up!

Bad hair, bad fashion and bad breath.
No one was badly hurt thank goodness but I hurt my neck and they don't let pregnant ladies just walk away from car accidents. Which meant being strapped down and immobilized for the long ride across town while I cried my eyes out in an ambulance. I was terrified the baby might be hurt from the seatbelt and she wasn't moving. I couldn't even call my husband who was two states away to let him know what had happened.

Four hours in the E.R. when you're starving, your mouth is dry and has that morning-coffee funk lingering... I swear everyone in that emergency room got within six inches of my mouth. The x-ray techs got it the worst as they adjusted my neck for pictures, I was trying not to be vain about it considering the situation but come on! It's bad enough when your mascara is all over your face from tears and you have to have someone help you sit to pee 'cause your neck's in a brace and you're round as a pumpkin, but oh no... Rhianna has butt-breath to top it off. *facepalm*

    No bad breath here...
Yep, hospitals are all about being humiliated in every way imaginable whether it's butt-flashing gowns or sharing something-died-in-your-mouth breath with strangers up-close and personally.

Three months later I had my Mentos Pure Fresh Gum in my backpack when we went to the same hospital where we welcomed our healthy baby girl into our family. No way was I going to be screaming in agony with my goods on display with a stinky mouth. As you can see, she didn't mind mommy's breath. :)

So... do you have a moment you wish you'd had some Mentos Pure Fresh?

Notes: You can learn more about Mentos Pure Fresh on the Mentos website. I received a sample of Mentos Pure Fresh Gum through Influenster which in no way determined my opinion of this product.

Beauty Rhi-view: Montagne Jeunnesse Passion Peel-Off Mask

Hey everybody... I'm feeling a lot better. That cold was seriously kicking my butt. But now I have a bit of a breakout coming on—Oh joy!—and so I thought I'd use my mask sample from the Holiday VoxBox before my skin got even more hideable. I do apologize for the unattractive locale but I needed a spot with good lighting and quiet, two things almost impossible to get in this house. ;)

If you want to know anything more about the mask I tried feel free to comment with your question. If you're a fellow Influenster who got to try a different mask you think might work better for my skin please, please leave a comment telling me which one it was. When I was running errands the stock was really low so I grabbed two others just based on the fact the were the only two not peel-offs.

If you want to know more about Montagne Jeunesse please check out their website, visit their Facebook page, and Follow them on Twitter.

...and yeah, I realized after-the-fact that I spelled Jeunesse with 2 N's in the video. Whoops! I'm blaming my dyslexia and sticking to it. lol I swear, I even read it on the package last night as having 2 N's. At least I pronounced it right... right? :P

Not Just for Greenies, Great for Everyone! (5 Stars)

In the past year I decided to make a point to find great eco friendly products to incorporate into various parts of our lifestyle. Switching cleaners and using reusable shopping bags are great, easy ways to make changes but I wasn't so sure about toys. Could there really be great toys that are ecofriendly and fun?

When my little girl turned two this fall she was given a repainted hand-me-down play kitchen from some members of our extended family. It's cute and fun but we needed something to play with in the kitchen. Let me just say now that I hate plastic toys in general so I was leaning toward a metal or wood set for the tot when I found the Green Toys dish set. The colors are gorgeous! When I read that not only are these made from recycled milk bottles, they're also made here in the USA I thought for sure they'd be super expensive. Honestly though, in comparison to other sets I looked at they really weren't that much more. I was sold.

Lightweight but shocklingly durable this set takes a daily beating from my daughter. They're nice enough that we could use real food in them (Daddy this does not mean I want to find dried Dr. Pepper in the tea cups again!) and dishwasher safe, which I tested. They're the perfect size for toddlers and the colors are just the right grouping to be great for either gender if you care about that sort of thing. The only thing I don't like about these is the forks. They're odd shaped and I can't imagine trying to use the tines for real food. We did have to put all the place settings up since our toddler was running with them in her mouth but during supervised play they're just too cute for words.

On the whole the tot and I love this dish set. I feel good knowing these are American made and ecofriendly. I have full intentions to buy many more toys for our kids from Green Toys because even if I wasn't trying to be more environmentally concious these are just well made toys anyway!

Notes: This product was purchased by me and I have received no compensation for endorsing this product.

    Influenster Holiday VoxBox Opening!

As promised... I made a video of me opening my holiday voxbox! I've never really done a video before and it shows but it's just little old me being honest. Come see my goodies...

I hope to share more about each product with you guys very soon. I have some fun ideas for each actually. 'Cause I'm nerdy like that. And my son tried to steal the coconut Softsoap already. ;)

Oh! And sorry there are gingerbread men in little packages floating around on the table. Those were NOT in the box. They came from a bakery nearby and I was literally serving dinner, trying to make the video and get ready to leave for the gym—cold and all!—so I just kinda shoved stuff aside except for them 'cause they're so cute and festive. This is the HOLIDAY VoxBox afterall!

Be back with more soon darlings. -- Rhi

AFk-ish this week... 'cept the giveaway & #HolidayVoxBox!

Hey everybody! I dunno what's up with me but I caught a cold last week and can't seem to shake it. It just keeps getting worse and worse.

It probably doesn't help that I don't know how to rest. What mom does? I can't even seem to get caught up with my laundry and dishes and make decent meals this weekend. :(

Naturally with my head foggy from congestion I can't think enough to write my reviews. So I think I'm going to just call in sick to the blog this week. lol I'll make sure to pop by and handle the giveaway and hopefully be well enough to share the Holiday VoxBox if it shows up by weeks' end but aside from that I really need to put my health first before this gets any worse. It's making my asthma act up which is just unusual so I'm not taking any risks. Getting me butt to bed with some tea and vitamins!

Hope to be back next weekend with good health. XO -- Rhi

Amazon + Melissa & Doug Deals Tomorrow! [12/08]

Howdy dear readers! I'm feeling under the weather today, think I caught a cold from someone at the gym. :( But I thought I'd share this now so I don't forget tomorrow in the haze of sneezing and coughing. Bookmark the link and check it out tomorrow for all the deals.

I already bought the Melissa and Doug items I wanted for the tot this Christmas but I might have to pick up a couple for next year when she can have the 3+ year old stuff if the ones I want are on sale. I am going to kick myself if the ones I already picked up go down to a better deal. lol

Obviously we won't know what's in the deals until tomorrow but I thought I'd share the links to some of our favorites we either have already or have on our wishlist. :) In no special order, with my hopes of giving you some gift giving ideas to look for in tomorrow's special deals. -- Rhi
